乡村大厨以体育赢得爱情——村头饭馆的大厨张二勇喜欢张村长的女儿笑笑，但笑笑的父亲竭力阻拦两人的情感。这时张、王、李三个村盖新学校的事定下来了：三个村联合办个运动会，让三个村的小学生来参加。哪个村得第一新学校就在哪个村盖。张家村孩子的体育成绩一向最差，张村长一筹莫展。大厨张二勇得知消息后，告诉张村长他从前在县体校当过教练，可以带孩子们赢，但有个条件--要是赢了，张村长以后不许干涉他和笑笑的事。于是大厨张二勇带着五个“种子选手”踏上了一场前所未有的训练之路……。A nine part series depicting the varying fortunes of four friends - Nicky, Geordie, Mary and Tosker - from the optimistic times of 1964 to the uncertainties of 1995.
